RememberAfter each L'Hopital step or cancellation, substitute again: if the form is still 0/0, the root is repeated and you must go one more step.

Solution MCQ · 1 mark · −⅓ if wrong

Answer: (B)

Method: confirm 0/0, factor out the common root, substitute.

At : numerator , denominator . So divides both.

  • Numerator: .
  • Denominator: .

Cancel (allowed because in a limit):

Same answer by L'Hopital. One pass gives , which is still at . A second pass gives .

Trap. Both polynomials have a double root at 1, so a single L'Hopital pass (or a single factor of ) does not remove the indeterminacy. Stopping there leads to "does not exist" or 0; mis-factoring the denominator gives .

What was tested: recognising a repeated root and re-checking the form after each simplification.
