Q.3

Let and let be the partial order on given by

where means . A total order on contains if every pair of is also a pair of the total order.

RememberTo count total orders extending a partial order, place forced elements first (a unique maximum goes last, a unique minimum first), then multiply the independent choices for the rest.

Solution NAT · 1 mark · no negative marking

Answer: 8

Method. A total order containing is a way of listing the five elements in a line, smallest first, so that whenever and in , appears before (a linear extension). Read off the structure first:

  • , , , : a diamond with at the bottom and at the top.
  • , and is incomparable with .

Every other element is below , so must come last. Among , must come first and can be in either order: ways ( or ). Element only has to precede , so it can be inserted in any of the gaps of a 3-element line before (before , between the first two, between the last two, or right before ): ways.

Total .

The trap. Two slips are common: ignoring (answer , the diamond alone) or forgetting it is still bounded by and letting it go anywhere among 5 positions (answer ). Another is to count minus "bad" orders, which is error-prone; placing the forced elements first is faster.

What was tested. Reading a partial order from its pair list, recognising maximal and minimal elements, and counting linear extensions by fixing forced positions and multiplying independent choices.
